Austin Engagement Photography for Couples Who Want Photos That Feel Like Them
You’re engaged (🎉) and somewhere between “we just said yes” and “we should probably start planning this thing.”
I’m Nathan Migal, a documentary-style wedding and engagement photographer based in the Austin, Texas area. I photograph couples all over Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, the Hill Country, and beyond, with a focus on real connection, honest emotion, and images that feel like memories—not stiff poses.
This page is all about engagement sessions:
why they matter, how I approach them, and what you can expect if we work together.
Why Engagement Photos Matter (Beyond Save-the-Dates)
Most couples first think of engagement photos as something to use for:
Save-the-dates
Wedding websites
Guest book/sign-in displays
Prints for home and shower décor
All of that is great—but it’s only the surface.
From my perspective as a wedding photographer, an engagement session is:
A rehearsal for your wedding portraits
A chance to test-drive your photographer
Time to get comfortable in front of the camera
A way to build trust and ease before the wedding day ever arrives
By the time your wedding comes around, couples who’ve done engagement photos with me usually slide right back into the movements, poses, and rhythms we found together during their session—without thinking about it. That’s what makes wedding portraits feel fun and effortless instead of awkward and rushed.
My Style: Documentary, Honest, Minimal Posing
I describe my work as documentary-style wedding and engagement photography.
What that means for you:
I pay close attention to how you naturally interact—the way you walk together, laugh, hold hands, lean in.
I give just enough direction to help you feel confident, but not so much that you feel like you’re acting.
I’m not interested in turning you into models. I want you to look like yourselves, just on a really good day in really good light.
Rather than rigid “chin here, hand here, smile now” posing, I prefer to:
Set up a loose prompt or scenario
Let you move and respond in your own way
Watch for the in-between moments: the laugh after the joke, the exhale when you relax, the quick glance that says “you’re my person”
Those are the frames you’ll want in an album ten years from now.
What to Expect During Your Engagement Session

We’ll get a handful of “grandma will frame this” portraits, plus a lot of in-between moments that feel more like the two of you on a really good date. After the Session
You’ll receive a curated gallery of edited images you can use for your save-the-dates, wedding website, and home, and—equally important—you’ll have a much clearer sense of what you want your wedding photos to feel like.
Frequently Asked Questions About Engagement Sessions
Do we need to have a wedding date or venue booked first?
No. In fact, many of my couples do their engagement session before they’ve finalized a venue or date. It’s one of the best early steps you can take in your planning.
We’re awkward in front of the camera. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Almost every couple tells me this. My job is to guide you, help you relax, and create space where you can be yourselves. The “awkward” feeling usually lasts about five minutes, and then you forget we’re making “photo shoot” images and just feel like you’re hanging out together.
Can we bring our dog (or kids / family)?
Absolutely. Dogs are always welcome, and I’m happy to help you choose a location that’s pet-friendly. If you want to incorporate kids or family for a portion of the session, we can talk about how to structure that.
What should we wear?
I usually recommend outfits that feel like you—nothing too tight, itchy, or fussy. Neutrals and softer tones tend to photograph beautifully in Austin’s light, but the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. Once we’re booked, I can send you simple guidelines and examples.
When is the best time of day for photos?
In most Austin locations, the best light is in the hour or two before sunset. Morning can also be beautiful and quieter, especially in busier areas.
